Digital Note-Taking Tools & Accessories

My tested picks for switching from paper to digital — a budget option and a splurge option for every piece of the setup, so you can choose what fits.

This list started as the shopping guide for Episode 177: Switching from Paper to Digital, but tools and prices change fast, so I update this page when I can. Bookmark it and come back when you’re ready to buy the tools for digital note-taking, or when you’re ready to upgrade.

Budget Pick Splurge Pick

Apple

$399
The current entry-level iPad, and it’s plenty for GoodNotes as long as you’re not loading up dozens of other apps.
$69.98
It has pressure sensitivity and palm rejection, but skips the Pro price tag.
GoodNotes app
$11.99/yr or $35.99 one-time
Same app either tier — start with Essential and upgrade later if you want it. Download it from the App Store to get started.
$649
It’s faster, with more storage headroom, so it’s my personal pick if you’re running your whole business off it.
$99
It also adds squeeze/barrel-roll shortcuts and haptics, though that’s nice-to-have, not required.
GoodNotes app
$11.99/yr or $35.99 one-time
Same app either tier — start with Essential and upgrade later if you want it. Download it from the App Store to get started.

Samsung

$449 (S Pen included)
Best value on Android — no separate stylus purchase needed. GoodNotes for Android officially came out of beta earlier this year, so it’s no longer as rough around the edges.
$799 (S Pen included)
It has a bigger 12.4″ AMOLED screen, which is great for side-by-side note-taking, and it also comes with the S Pen in the box.

Other Accessories

$7
Adds texture so it feels like writing on paper. Not as durable as the premium version, but a fraction of the cost.
$17.99
Keeps your stylus attached and charged so you’re not hunting for it.
$25.98
Good for typing next to your handwritten notes, so you’re not buying a separate keyboard.
$5.99
A budget-friendly 4-pack that fits the USB-C Pencil — nibs wear down with daily writing, so it’s good to keep spares on hand.
$49.99
The one I actually use, because the texture is higher quality and it protects the pencil tip longer than the knockoffs.
$45.99
Sturdier materials and a snugger pencil holster for daily on-the-go use — designed to fit the Apple Pencil Pro too. Note: this listing is sized for the 13″ iPad Air, so double-check sizing if you’re on the 11″.
$79.99
Detachable keyboard with a trackpad and backlighting, plus a slot for your Pencil — a solid step up without the full Apple Magic Keyboard price tag.
$8.97
An 8-pack of replacement tips for the Apple Pencil Pro, so you’re stocked up for a while.

Quick heads up: tech moves fast! I update this list when I can, but I’m not able to keep it current year-round, so models, prices, and availability can change in between updates. Pencils and accessories are also picky — they’re often made for a specific tablet model or screen size, so please double-check compatibility with your exact device (and do a little of your own research on current pricing) before you buy.
