Ep. 284 A Better Way to Plan Your Shop’s Year

If you have ever opened a business planner in January feeling hopeful, only to abandon it by March, you are not alone. Most planners were not built with a retail planning system in mind. They were built for a general small business, not a store with seasons, inventory cycles, and customers standing at the register.

That is exactly why I rebuilt the Shop Planner for 2027.

Retail Shop Planner 2027

A Better Planning System Starts With a Better Definition

Over the last few episodes, I have been rethinking what planning actually means for independent retailers.

In Episode 282, I talked about why so many store owners feel like they are always behind, even when they are working incredibly hard. In Episode 283, I separated the act of planning from the habit of using a planner.

Here is the distinction that changed everything for me: planning is not about filling in every page or color coding your calendar. Planning is making thoughtful decisions before you are standing in the middle of a busy day trying to figure out what happens next. A planner is simply where those decisions live.

Once I understood that, I looked at the Shop Planner differently. We have been creating it for four years, and this is year five, but the 2027 version is not just a new cover with updated dates.

Instead, I reconsidered what independent retailers actually needed from it and which parts were adding real support. If you took my planner survey last year, thank you. Your answers shaped this entire redesign.

Most Business Planners Were Not Made for Retail

Retail runs on its own rhythm. You are working several months ahead while also responding to whatever happened in the store yesterday.

A general business planner gives you a place to write goals. A calendar reminds you of appointments. Neither tells you when to start buying for a major season, when to review inventory, or when a promotion needs to be built so it is not thrown together the night before it launches.

That is why the Shop Planner has never been a generic planner with a few retail words sprinkled in. It is a retail business planner designed around the work you are already doing, including the parts that are easy to postpone because no customer is standing in front of you waiting for them.

It gives your decisions a place to live, and it helps you see your year as one connected retail cycle instead of 12 unrelated months.

Printed and Digital Planner Options, Finally Matched

Here is the biggest change for 2027: the printed and digital planners now contain the exact same planning system. Same worksheets, same calendars, same checklists, all around 220 pages either way.

In past years, choosing a format also meant choosing different content, which made the decision harder than it needed to be. This year you are simply picking the format you are most likely to use.

The printed planner is for the store owner who likes to write by hand, keep the planner open on a desk, or carry it into a meeting. Its table of contents now includes page numbers since it does not have tabs.

The digital planner is for the store owner who prefers a tablet, wants business tools together digitally, and likes clickable navigation. The digital version goes even further, with both tabs and a fully clickable table of contents. Want to jump to Q2 planning or your trackers? Just click.

And if you have been torn between the two, you can now buy both in a bundle. Several of you asked for the option to test both formats, or to use one yourself while a store manager uses the other.

The new cover reflects what this planner has become. It is simply called The Shop Planner.

What’s Inside the Shop Planner

The Shop Planner connects the layers of your retail year. You step back and look at your major seasons, events, and priorities, then bring those decisions into your quarterly, monthly, and weekly planning.

Calendars: Dated monthly and weekly calendars in both formats. Daily calendar pages did not make the cut this year. According to the survey, most shopkeepers were not using them.

Worksheets: Simplified and decluttered. Several worksheets were rarely used because they were more operational, meaning they needed daily or frequent use rather than a spot in a planner. What remains is intentional: worksheets built for setting goals, making decisions, and tracking numbers.

Social Media and Marketing Planning: We kept the social media ideas you have always appreciated, and added a dated monthly planning sheet for social media and email marketing, so you are not trying to map it out on your regular calendar.

Checklists: The monthly and quarterly checklists were significantly improved for 2027 to work across different peak seasons and business models, whether you are a solo store owner, run a team, or work with vendors and consignment.

End of Period Reviews: New end of month reviews and a year-end review section, built to help you carry useful information into the next month or the next year.

Every part of the planner comes back to the same idea: make the decision thoughtfully, record it somewhere useful, and stop starting from scratch every time it comes back around.

Choosing the Version That Fits You

Whichever format you choose, do not shame yourself over it. You do not have to go digital just to feel “with the times” if paper works better for you.

That said, some of you switched to digital planning a few years ago and have not looked back. I have not looked back either. In July of 2022, I shared my own switch from paper and pen note taking to digital in Episode 177.

If digital note taking intrigues you, that post is worth a visit. One of my favorite benefits is that once you load the planner into an app like GoodNotes, it syncs across your devices. A tablet is ideal for daily use, but you can still pull it up on your phone or computer whenever you need it.

Planner Pricing, Delivery, and Add-Ons

The Goal Is Not a Perfectly Filled Planner

I want to close where this series started. If you have struggled to use planners consistently in the past, don’t buy this one because you think a nice planner will turn you into a different person.

Here is the reframe instead:

You do not need to become a different person. You need a planning system that understands retail, gives your decisions somewhere useful to live, and helps you find your way back to them after real life interrupts the plan.

Some weeks your planner will be neat. Other weeks it will have arrows, crossed-out dates, and a note you scribbled standing at the cash wrap. That is still planning. A useful planner is not one you complete perfectly. It is one that helps you make a good decision, remember why you made it, and take the next action when the time comes.

That is the better way independent retailers can plan their shop’s year.
