Have you started building your shop’s email list?
Whether you own an online store, a brick & mortar or a small business you should OWN your list of subscribers.
What do I mean by “own”? Well, if you use the Square Point of sale system, for example, customers can enter their email address for a receipt but you never actually OWN the list of emails. Square does. You can pay Square to start promoting to those customers but the list isn’t your own. And who wants to pay for something that should be FREE?
Don’t get me wrong. We use Square and it’s a simple, easy-to-use system for shopkeepers like us. But I want the ability to market to my own customers, without paying for it!
So how do we do this?
It’s so simple. Aside from an email sign-up form on our website, we use good old fashion pen and paper. We keep an email sign-up sheet on our cash wrap at The Salvaged Boutique, right by our register. We take a clipboard with the sign-up sheet to markets. We take a sign-up sheet when we travel and do demonstrations at other businesses. ALWAYS.
We didn’t do this when we first started, so I want to make sure all new business owners start this practice IMMEDIATELY. Even if you are 1 or 2 or 5 years into your business, it’s not too late to start!
We now have almost 1000 customers on our list. We help promote the email list by offering our customers exclusive information. For example, our email list members get notified of our workshops first. Some of our workshops tend to sell out quickly, so our customers now know that if they want to hear about workshops first – before we share on Facebook or Instagram – they need to be on our list.
You could offer a discount, exclusive deals, or an incentive to get your customers to sign up too!
